According to the 1905 edition of "A Gazetteer of Indian Territory" by Henry Gannett, one Hawani Creek is a left-hand branch of Red River in the Chickasaw Nation. The Chickasaw Nation is in the southeast US. The 1870's Hawani apparently were a horse-ride away from San Francisco.
In scene 1, the two playgoers trade lines from two of Shakespeare's plays. From Richard III Act 4 Scene 2, Richard III declaiming after Catesby exits, "[Murder her brothers, and then marry her! Uncertain way of gain!] But I am in so far in blood that sin will pluck on sin: Tear-falling pity dwells not in this eye." And from Hamlet Act 3 Scene 2, Hamlet to his followers, "O, it offends me to the soul to hear a robustious periwig-pated fellow tear a passion to tatters, [to very rags, to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumbshows and noise.]"
