An interesting episode for several reasons. First, the story is interesting: Big Red the saloon owner gets shot by accident and the bar crowd quickly starts placing bets on whether or not she lives the night. The in house professional gambler, Guy Fremont, puts the odds at 5 to 1 Red won't make it. Paladin discovers Fremont had been a doctor 10 years earlier. Paladin presses him into service which forces Fremont to pay off all bets as his operation on Red was successful. Second, the actor who plays Guy Fremont left acting shortly after this episode aired and became a well-known stock market analyst and wrote the NYT best seller "The Wall Street Jungle" which was on the best seller list for almost a year. In this episode he sort of channels Ronald Coleman in voice and mannerism. Third, the actress who plays Ada, Virginia Capers, might shock you as this is 1961 and she is Black and is playing a dance hall hostess. She was a Julliard student and went on to earn a Tony in the musical version of "A Raisin in the Son." In addition to TV and Broadway, she also appeared in movies. Look for her as Nurse Sparrow in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

Intriguing array of talent here!

As the fellow reviewer outlined, in a series of amazing actors and actress appearances, this may be the most eclectic. Virginia Capers (from A Raisin in the Sun to Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and Richard Ney (he became a Wall Street expert and best-selling author, banned from the Johnny Carson Show) do excellent jobs, and are known for much beyond this work. But, Director Richard Donner is another level of twist - he of The Omen,. Superman. Lethal Weapon fame - and married to Laura Shuler Donner, of X Men, You've Got Mail, Free Willy, Mr. Mom, St. Elmo's Fire fame. Layers of genius in this episode. A great watch, in a great series!
