Filling out Paladin's back story in the early episodes, it is mentioned that he was a West Point graduate and former professional soldier before the Civil War. Paladin mentions being with Colonel Doubleday at Chancellorsberg. Doubleday was actually a Union Brig. General at Chancellorsville (not a Colonel at Chancellorsberg). This would make Paladin a Union soldier.
Paladin (Richard Boone) to display his "bona fides" claims he saw Candy Cummings throw the first curveball in 1876. That was the year the National League (for professional baseball) was formed and Candy Cummings, who is often credited with inventing the pitch known as a "curveball", was a pitcher with the Hartford Dark Blues team of that league in 1876.
It has been mentioned that Col. Doubleday was a one-star at Chancellorsburg. Technically, both descriptions of rank were correct. Until the Spanish-American War of 1898, the informal practice of most-senior surviving officer (or, many times, NCOs) being in command of a battle unit was not observed. The practice of the Civil War period was to grant temporary (brevet) field promotions in rank to officers and NCOs, usually for the duration of the conflict, at the end of which time said officers' ranks reverted to their official commissioned rank. Therefore, here Col. Abner Doubleday WAS a brevet brigadier general ("one-star," in military slang) during Chancellorsburg.
