Can Paladin be fooled ever?
theowinthrop10 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
In a dry period of his career (we see Paladin - Richard Boone - talking to Hey Boy - Kam Tong - in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco asking if anything of interest for him occurred, and being told that there has been a major earthquake in China and a steamboat explosion on the Mississippi) Paladin gets invited to accompany a Mexican official named Miguel Rojas (Michael Pate), his wife Maria (June Vincent) and the hotel Doctor Mayhew (Onslow Stevens) to the opera. During the performance a man enters their box and stabs Rojas in the stomach, but Rojas shoots the man dead. Mayhew and the Rojas leave the theater, while Paladin prepares to tell the police what happened. Later he learns that there has been a blood feud involving Rojas family and a neighboring one, involving corpse mutilations as well as killings. He also learns from Dr. Mayhew that although the wound seemed trivial the patient has developed complications. Paladin visits Rojas and is asked to accompany his body for burial back in Mexico, for which he will be paid $1,000.00. Paladin hopes this won't be necessary.

The next week Hey Boy hands Paladin the newspaper, and the main item is about a huge payroll robbery. But the item Paladin concentrates on is the notice of the death of Rojas. He is soon contacted by the widow and goes to the undertakers establishment (the undertaker is Ned Glass) and sees the coffin is ready. All Paladin has to do is to get a stagecoach and transport it to Mexico.

He hires one, but soon has troubles on the route. First with a know-it-all American border officer who doesn't like Paladin's face, and who insists that dead bodies can't be taken across the boarder (Paladin comes ready with a legal volume showing they can). Second there is an attack on the stagecoach by Mexican bandits. Even after beating back the bandits, Paladin is uncertain about his situation. Is he still being followed, and by whom? It is a cleverly done little episode, but the trick is too easy to guess, especially after one recalls movies like THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. Still it is interesting to see Boone's Paladin in his native San Francisco high life, attending the opera and discussing Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET with Rojas.

Expensive caretaker

The fairly elaborate and ingenuous plot is the main interest of the episode, which does not show Paladin at his most interesting.

Have Corpse, Will Travel

Warning: Spoilers
A visiting Mexican delegate decides to play Palladin for a sap as dying Don Miguel Rojas (Michael Pate) hires the gunfighter to escort his body safely back home to Mexico after his expected passing in San Francisco.

Although this episode is well acted and directed, a few things about the story don't really make much sense. The way they get Palladine to witness the assassination attempt on Don Miguel seems to be leaving an awful lot to chance; and if Palldin actually checks on his cargo either before he takes it from the coroner or in route, the gig is up. And what does it say for Mexican statesmen if this one is involved in a payroll robbery.

This episode has a lot more scenes of Palladin in San Francisco than usual. I also think its kind of odd there is no comparison to the Lincoln assassination considering what year this was supposed to take place and the similarity in attempts.

But if you just sit back and enjoy and don't ask a lot of questions, this episode is okay.

HAVE GUN - WILL TRAVEL "Strange Vendetta" 1957

HAVE GUN – WILL TRAVEL was a Western series that ran on television between 1957 and 1963. The series was very popular and was always in the top ten of the television ratings. The series ran for a total of 225 episodes. Richard Boone headlines as "Paladin", a gun for hire, if the cause is right. Working out of San Francisco, Boone places ads in newspapers offering his services. $1,000 and he is your man. While handy with a gun or fists, he tries to settle the problem without violence. (Not very successfully as a general rule) In this episode, the seventh of the series, Boone is attending the opera in San Francisco with a visiting Mexican statesman, Michael Pate and his wife, June Vincent. During the performance, there is an attempt on Pate's life. The would be assassin is killed but not before stabbing Pate.

Travelling with Pate and Vincent is a doctor, Onslow Stevens. He tends to Pate while Boone deals with the local Police. Later on Boone is called to Pate's bedside and told he is dying. Boone is offered 1000 dollars plus expenses to take his body back to Mexico when Pate dies. Money is money, so Boone agrees.

Several days later Boone is called to the undertakers to pick up Pate's boxed up corpse. The coffin is tied to the roof of a rented stage and the journey to Mexico begins.

Strange things start to happen as the stage is assaulted by a group of Mexican bandits. The attack is beaten off but the stage driver is killed. Why would bandits want a coffin? Boone soon finds after a look in the coffin that there is no body. There is, however, 200,000 in cash inside, cash taken from a massive payroll robbery back in the States.

Soon the not so dead Pate puts in an appearance. It was all part of a plan to smuggle the cash into Mexico. Needless to say Pate overplays his hand and is soon added to the coffin for real. Then the poor "widow' is corralled for a trip back to the States. Back in San Fran the doc, Stevens and the undertaker are also grabbed.

Not one of the better episodes in my humble opinion.

Warning: Spoilers
Hey Boy seems to be attempting to discover Paladin's business and employment. Has Paladin removed into the Carlton recently?

Things are not quite as they seem when Paladin is asked to accompany a body across the border. Interestingly, the stagecoach driver Timmons does most of the shooting when the border bandits attack. It isn't until after Timmons is killed that Paladin begins to return fire.

Paladin's Horse: Stagecoach and 4

Paladin's Gear: Tuxedo with ruffled shirt, concha black hat, black Western button down shirt, black pants, black holster with colt, single shot derringer, decorated Western saddle...the spurs have been abandoned along with the necktie.

Paladin Shoots: at Mexican border bandits, Miguel Rojas

Paladin Kills: Manfred Holt, Jailbreak Team 3, Miguel Rojas

Total Kills: 5
