When Ralston picks up Mrs. Nichols at the airport, he is driving a 1969 Chevelle. There are alternate cuts of the Chevelle and Steve's 1968 Mercury.
Captain Nichols has both his branch insignia and rank affixed improperly. They both - in the Army - should be parallel to the bottom of the collar flap. He has them mounted at a 45 degree angle, which is how the Navy officers would do it.
Colonel Hart has the wrong branch insignia (Infantry instead of MP) on his left collar flap and his Army colonel "bird" is not affixed properly on the right collar flap. It is supposed to be parallel to the bottom, but is instead canted at a 45 degree angle as a Navy captain would wear it.
The 1969 Chevelle used as an Army staff car was a four-door Malibu hardtop (no door pillar and an upgraded interior). The actual staff cars back then would have been just the cheaper Chevelle four-door sedans. A big door pillar and very spartan vinyl bench seats.
When Ralston sends the fake telegram to Lt. Carter's wife, he informs her that he has only 3 days of R and R. When the officer comes to inform Mrs. Carter that her husband was killed, Her mother informs him that Lt. Carter has 3 weeks of R and R.
The suspect replies, " Perect. Pluperfect."
His response shows an ignorance of English grammar.

At the room of the 1st victim, McGarrett introduces Colonel Ken Hart to a friend of the victim as the Provost Marshall. An Army Provost Marshall is equivalent to a civilian Chief of Police however Col. Hart is wearing Cross Rifles on his left collar which are symbols of the Infantry. A Provost Marshall, as with all Military Policemen, wear Cross Pistols.
