"Deep Sleep" is the first episode of "The Helen West Casebook," which probably was meant to last, but wound up as three episodes in 2002.

Amanda Burton is the Crown Prosecutor, Helen West. As she recuperates from an operation to remove an ovarian cyst, she looks at the new files from her office.

One file concerns that of Margaret Carlton, who died suddenly while her husband was away. It's found that she had 12 grams of cocaine in her system. Her husband is a pharmacist, and tells his assistant that his wife was an addict.

The police have written this off as an accident, but Helen isn't convinced. She consults an anesthetist friend of hers who tells her that the woman could not have snorted 12 grams on her own - she'd be unconscious before the end.

Helen knows there is more there and continues to pursue it.

Amanda Burton is lovely as Helen, but this episode, at least, moved slowly. It's a good, solid story though. Just not all that exciting in its presentation.

Look for Martin Freeman, Dr. Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, in a small role.
