Quenton Barnes, a serial killer immortal is killing people that were associated with his execution decades earlier. Mac's old immortal friend Michael, shows up. He's tracking Barnes. Barnes killed his fiance decades earlier.
A new recurring character is introduced, Charlie DeSalvo. Charlie owns a dojo that Duncan and Richie go to train at. Charlie is a good guy, but he is also one of the nosiest characters on the show. For some reason, Duncan likes to say "Charlie" all the time. Not in this episode, but keep your ears open for future episodes. In conversations with Charlie, he says his name too often even though his convo is direct with him. Pay attention, you'll see what I mean. It's annoying.
Joe wants Duncan to track down Barnes and "do something" about it. Mac rightly points out he is not a cop. This is the beginning of a long controversial thing Joe does. He is not supposed to interfere in immortal affairs, but he does, and his interfering does indeed gives Mac the upper hand. I mean obviously, we all want Mac to win, but I always had a problem with this because it's almost like cheating. Mac doesn't need to cheat. He doesn't need to have an upper hand. He's already top dog.
It turns out Michael had DID, and he is Quenton Barnes. You'd think the Watchers would have known Barnes and Michael are the same people. I know Barnes messes with the Watcher file. But since Joe knew Barnes was back killing people it seemed odd he didn't know about the second id.
Tessa is once again terrorized by a man, Barnes. Oh boy. They(the writers) just couldn't let her alone. They had to have her be victimized yet again. Honestly, I grew tired of this on the show. I love Tessa. But the writers seemed to think woman=victim. Many times over. It just struck me as if tho that maybe they like violence towards women or something. I'm a big Xena fan. I love strong warrior women in fiction. So for me personally, this was a big turn-off.
The fight between Duncan and Barnes was actually really good. In the end they did an intense shirtless Mac working out scene. They re-use this scene in other episodes. Mac has really bulked up. Bulging muscles but not as chiseled as in season one's 'Mountain Men.' Still really nice tho.
I found the story kind of weak. It was pretty obvious that Michael and Barnes were one and the same. Mac off on a goose chase at the asylum twice seemed like lazy writing to me. Tessa terrorized yet again, just made me frustrated and turned off. I gave the episode a 6/10.
