Ray Doesn't Have It
Hitchcoc1 August 2021
Several threads. Irwin and Joyce work on legal matters and he admits his feelings toward him. They go to get Frank's suits at the dry cleaner and have a big surprise. He later shows great heroism. Ray's job is on the line. He has no respect from his cops and there is racial conflict all over. Frank defends him but sees that what is said has validity. Russo has been put in an untenable situation where she is expected to use her sexiness to gain information but, in Frank's opinion, compromises the case by going to far. Bobby Hill dives to catch a baby, thrown out of a third story apartment. Renko tries to become a sort of press agent. And once again Buntz is suspected of misconduct. Dennis Franz is a great character.

Nice episode

Warning: Spoilers
Furillo (a terrific Danial J. Travanti) tries to help Calletano (an excellent Rene Enriquez) deal with a mutiny amongst his officers who are on the verge of a racial war. Moreover, after Russo (foxy Megan Gallagher) busts a criminal (a memorably slimy portrayal by Chazz Palminteri) under questionable circumstances, Furillo has no choice but to let the guy go.

The whole business with Calletano floundering as a police captain is especially sad and painful to watch as it eventually culminates in several of Calletano's men fighting with each other. Moreover, Buntz (the always fantastic Dennis Franz) gets in trouble for making some dubious busts and has to let Sid the Snitch (a deliciously wormy Peter Jurasik) stay at his apartment for safety's sake. Goldblume (sturdy Joe Spano) gets reunited with grade school buddy Merkur (nicely played by Scott Paulin), who's trying to realize his aspirations to being a writer with mixed success. Bernstein (a wonderful George Wyner) has a lovely moment in which he admits to Davenport (the marvelous Veronica Hamel) that he's always had a crush on her. Familiar character actor Jimmie F. Skaggs contributes a spot-on slimy turn as skeevy thief Lambrachis.
