Doug gets dumber and dumber harassing a blowling shoe clerk
FlushingCaps7 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Three plots in this episode, sadly none of them involve Arthur.

First is Doug with his bowling team. They learn there's a new bowling shoe clerk named Denise. The guys all hoot about her lack of good looks (away from earshot) but Doug decides to go over and "make" her day by being nice to her.

Except he overdoes everything--even talks about her eyes matching his bowling ball. He so clearly came across as though he was flirting-while wearing his wedding ring-that she was rather upset. How upset? The next night when he went over to get a new shoelace, she calls out for her "boyfriend" and some guy comes out and hugs her and acts like a boyfriend and Doug returns to his lane where he learns that that guy is her brother.

Being Doug, he is now obsessed with talking to her and letting her know he wasn't hitting on her, just awkwardly trying to be nice. Denise is so creeped out, she takes to staying clear away from him. There's even a dumb scene where Carrie is there, just watching-yeah, that seems real. Doug wants to show Denise that he has someone. He goes over to Carrie when she is most upset and starts demanding a kiss for "good luck" and when Carrie says she doesn't feel like it, Doug is seen by Denise to be practically forcing this woman (who she doesn't know at all) to kiss him. He gets worse. On leaving the alley, Doug decides to chase after her to make his point-which terrifies the woman into running away, thinking he is going to attack her.

Carrie's problem is her boss has a young son, I guess about 2 or 3 that he wants Carrie to babysit-while at work in the law office, for a whole week. Carrie is thinking promotion and she is happy to play with the kid-even buys a bunch of toys for him. But all the little one wants to do is grab her breasts whenever he can. Carrie can't seem to figure out, over the course of three days, that she doesn't have to sit on the floor right next to the kid where he CAN so easily grab her. She can sit in a chair, be somewhat out of his reach and the problem will be solved.

Spence has installed Tivo and is excited about it being intuitive-after he programs it to record a few shows, the machine automatically records similar programming. Except the machine goes far beyond what Spence did record and records several programs that cause Spence to complain, "Oh no! Tivo thinks I'm gay!" He felt embarrassed because he learned about this right in front of Holly, who he actually wanted to impress because he wanted to date her.

He tries to fix it so Tivo knows he's not gay by recording a bunch of sports events. Tivo now records for him "men's ice dancing,"-which I don't think exists. Spence is so bothered by it embarrassing him again in front of Holly that he tells Holly, "I'm not gay. I'll prove it to you. We can go in the next room and have sex right now." This gets Holly to respond with an "I'm good," as she slips out the door.

Frankly, the goofiness of Spence's Tivo gone rogue was the only plot of the three that was at all amusing. I think the machine is more set to, say I record some major league baseball games, it will record some other major league games. I don't think that if I record some baseball and football games, it will automatically figure I also want to record women's tennis, for example. But that's how Spence's machine worked. I'm surprised the Tivo people didn't refuse to let them use their product's name, given that they give the wrong impression about how it works.

Carrie's kid was at an age where she should have been able to get him to not grab her, and it should have been easy for her to keep her distance so he couldn't. Doug's plot was the dumbest and his behavior got dumber as the show progressed. He is obsessed with proving to Denise that he is NOT stalking her. Then, as she is seen in the parking lot, he calls out and starts dashing after her-in the dark, almost isolated parking lot. Somehow he doesn't realize what a ridiculously dumb thing he is doing?

Actually, the other dumb thing is that Denise went in one two-minute conversation with him into believing he is doing far more than flirting with her. He talked in a goofy way one time and left her alone the rest of the night, but she gets her brother to pose as her boyfriend the very next time he comes over-when he did nothing silly that time, just asked for a shoelace. She wasn't too bright either.

To me, this one is a 3. It needed Arthur.
