- Slim's old CO is on a stage to Laramie with Jess riding shotgun. When he is wounded, he decides to stay at the Sherman ranch to rest and to size up political supporters who want him to run for President - expressing their views, however.
- Slim Sherman and Jess Harper become involved in presidential politics when General George Barton visits Laramie. Jess is riding shotgun on a special stage carrying General Barton, his daughter Lucy, and political aide Jeremy Thorne, along with an Army Captain and Sergeant as aides and for protection on horseback. At a stop near the Sherman station General Barton decides to ride there cross country alone but Jess accompanies him for protection. They are surprised by three men who try to kill the General while resting near a lake. The General only receives a mild arm wound while Jess is able to mortally wound one of the attackers who all flee. There are people who don't want to see him run and when the assassination attempt is foiled by Jess, the opinionated General decides to recuperate at the Sherman ranch. His daughter and Thorne want him to bend to the views of the party supporters. This embroils all the residents of Sherman Ranch and Relay Station in a tense and dangerous situation.—DarSpi
