John Bright Star was seen standing over the body of Mrs. Taggert who had befriended him when he was sick. The Rangers arrest him as he runs away but is unarmed. Initially refusing to say anything, Bright Star eventually states that the wounds on his face came from a mountain lion and not from Mrs. Taggert defending herself from the knife attack. A jury is empaneled which include Joe and Cotton. A short trial is held with everyone assuming an automatic guilty verdict. However, Joe is the lone holdout as most of the Rangers do not believe Bright Star is guilty. Parmalee sends Chad to look for more evidence. He finds some cat hair initially. A second search of the Taggert home sheds more light on events while the jury is slowly realizing there are more questions that need to be answered. Parmalee starts putting the details together for a Perry Mason style presentation on what really happened.
