James Coburn on Fire
Johnny_West8 April 2022
The young gun is now the top gun, and he is hunting down his old mentor to get revenge. This plot has been around in almost any genre of TV and movies (and fiction).

In this case, Jame Coburn plays Blake Carr, the former protege of Lance Creedy (played by John Howard). Carr believes that Creedy stole his girl, and then married her.

Carr does not provide much to justify that, and the dialogue in this episode is pretty lame. It just Carr raving against Creedy, as James Coburn could do so well.

The wife of Creedy is played by Roberta Haynes, who is a very attractive women, but she denies that she was ever Blake Carr's girl, and she tells him she never had any feelings for him, but that does nothing to calm down Carr.

Carr claims Creedy has brainwashed her into denying the love. Kind of ridiculous, but it pushes the showdown forward, as the plot required. If Coburn just shrugged his shoulders and admitted he made a mistake, that would be anticlimactic.

So in the end, Dan Troop, Creedy, and Carr face off, as tradition requires.

One thing that has always bothered me about these TV series is that for one episode, Dan Troop is best friends with a guest star who (supposedly) lives in town, and then that character is never seen again. I wish in all these old shows that some of these guests would have come back later, even if it was just to say hello.

Gunman in Town

Angel and the Bad man provides inspiration for this story. James Coburn plays the scary bad guy as usual. Tension builds effectively. Difference between John Wayne movie and this episode is TV Western has a much worse bad man. Good reflection on marriage and family. Soap opera hurts story.
