This episode marks the debut of Stephen Talbot as Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver's friend Gilbert. In this debut Gilbert's last name is Gates. In all future episodes he is Gilbert Bates with the exception of one episode in season 5, Beaver's English Test (1961) where he is Gilbert Harrison.
This is one of only three episodes in which Beaver's friends Gilbert, Larry and Whitey all appear. The others are Teacher Comes to Dinner (1959) and Beaver Makes a Loan (1959), both from the third season.
As Wally treats the scrape on Beaver's face, Beaver complains as if it hurts. Wally says, "Oh shut up, Beaver. It's just Mercurochrome. You don't want to get hydrophobia, do you?" Hydrophobia is the historic name for rabies, which Beaver could not have gotten from a scuffle with Gilbert. Mercurochrome was used as a topical antiseptic, ultimately removed from shelves [in some countries] due to concerns about mercury absorption through the skin.
