Freedom of the Press Abused
hogwrassler16 April 2021
The Ranger and Dan stop a runaway stagecoach and find the driver shot dead and the strongbox empty. Sheriff John Trent and his deputy arrive. Trent is an old friend of The Ranger and they agree to work together to stop a series of robberies that have been going on. They trail the robbers and catch up with them. Trent has to kill Hook Mason. The other two, Miller and Holt, are captured. The money can't be located because it was buried and Mason drew a map, which he concealed in a bullet in his holster. In town, newspaper editor Crowell's editorial rips the sheriff for arresting the two outlaws and causes the judge to order them released. The Ranger buys Mason's gun and holster from his widow, Mary. Sheriff John suspects Crowell is in cahoots with Miller and Holt. But how to prove it? The Ranger makes a great speech about how the press is obligated to explain both sides of story. Lovely Kasey Rogers, billed as Laura Elliott, plays Mary and is really good in her role. There is no Jay Silverheels again. The Ranger explains that "Tonto is away." This episode must have been filmed while Jay was still recovering from a heart attack and had to miss a few shows. Despite his absence, this episode still gets a 10 because of the solid story, good acting, and the message about the responsibility that goes along with freedom of the press.
