I may be prejudiced, but . . .

. . . I'm from North Carolina, and the writers weren't.

Lovejoy meets some (very) distant cousins, from NC, and becomes involved, sorta, with them. They are not exactly kissing cousins -- far from it; he ends up with a splitting headache, is in jail a couple of times, and witnessing a knock-down, drag-out fight, an alligator attack, and a young divvy. And Charlotte Cavendish comes through!

There were some shots of the Charlotte (NC) skyline, bringing up good memories for me; also some scenes in downtown Wilmington, which was a fairly busy film production center at the time. But the accents were pretty bad -- Cousins Mary-John and Rutherford were terrible, and their aunt, played by the usually wonderful Barbara Barrie, was better, but not good. John Gielgud, showing his age, had very few, but very good, scenes. The supporting roles were all over the place, including a couple of mountain men, hanging out on the NC coast -- and these two native types are VERY different.

This is still a very good series, but this episode was not what it could have been.

As a Southerner

I enjoyed it. Loved the southern ambience....a bit phony but a nice try.

What they thinking about...
4dbirds2 February 2022
What were they thinking about when they wrote and filmed this episode? This was the absolute worst episode not only in the Lovejoy series but in this genre. As Lovejoy fans from Day 1 and Americans, were could not believe our eyes and ears while watching this trash. It was clear that somebody across the pond somehow thought that movies and TV shows like Deliverence and The Dukes of Hazzard were somehow the norm on this side of the pond. After surviving this garbage episode, we are not sure if we should continue on to the final season of Lovejoy. Skip this double episode at all costs. Yuck. We still have a bad taste in our mouths from last nights viewing of this.

The Worst of Them All?

If you ever wonder if there is an episode to skip, this is the one.

It's a mess. All the worst, self indulgent storytelling habits that increase in the later episodes. Add in the awful American cliches and you end up with an utter flop. We can only wish that it had been lost along with the Roanoke Colony.

The Lost Colony
Prismark1025 July 2018
Soon after Dallas had ended, actor Ken Kercheval got an offer to star in the Christmas special of Lovejoy and was told that theatrical legend, Sir John Gielgud had already signed up.

I imagine some heated words were later exchanged with his agent when Ken realised that all his scenes were set in North Carolina while Gielgud's scenes were set in England!

Lovejoy encounters Mary-John Lovejoy, an amorous distant cousin from the USA who steals some artifacts from an English lord (John Gielgud.) Lovejoy goes to North Carolina for its return and encounters another cousin, the dastardly Rutherford Lovejoy (Kercheval.) Rutherford is a local bigwig and seems to have the local police in his beck and call.

Both Mary-John and Rutherford are involved in backing a local architectural dig which seems to be a front for some skullduggery that they have been involved in. Lovejoy plans to expose the pair but needs to avoid the local sheriff who keeps busting him.

This was a decent episode but it is also noticeable that there has been a drop in quality from the early Lovejoy shows.

Lovejoy in the south was a bad idea, but affected by "Duke's Of Hazzard" is even worse.
