- En route to R&R, Hawkeye (Alan Alda) is flagged down by a North Korean soldier (Mako) who holds him at gun point, forcing him to treat his wounded comrade. Hawkeye wants to move him to MASH, but the soldier wont allow him to do that. As long as the comrade is alive, Hawkeye is alive. They both show each other pics of their respective families. He tries the best he can, and has to perform a tracheotomy to keep the soldier alive when he has breathing troubles. The comrade dies despite Hawkeye's best efforts. The soldier allows Hawkeye to leave as he is convinced everything possible was done to save his comrade. Hawkeye is free to leave, but helps the soldier to dig a grave for his fallen comrade.
Back in camp, the officers change partners in a bridge tournament. Milred has won a bridge challenge at home and Potter (Harry Morgan) is ecstactic. Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) says that the equivalent of being the best hockey player in Ecuador. Potter says he and Milred were playing bridge even before Winchester was making gum marks on his silver spoon. He challenges Winchester to a game. Winchester warns that he and his sister are 4 times champions of the Beacon Hill Bridge society. Nobody wants Klinger as a partner and Mulcahy doesn't play bridge. Mulcahy suggests that Houlihan is an excellent player. Unlikely that BJ, a Californian, knows bridge at all. Winchester is confident that he will beat Potter even if he partners with his horse.
Winchester wants Margaret (Loretta Swit) to partner with her, but Potter is already there. Wicnhester offers 2 pairs of silk stockings and $50 cash, post winning (Potter calls it bribery, Winchester calls it Survival of the Richest). Margaret has already promised Potter (a bird on the collar, beats fifty dollars). Winchester goes to BJ (Mike Farrell) next. BJ wants to play his Frankie Lane records on Winchester's phonographs, trim his mustache with his silver scissors, 12 hrs of sleep and Winchester has to substitute for him in any and every situation. Post that, Winchester has to bring BJ's breakfast in bed. He agrees, as he is desperate.
Bridge night starts and Potter+Margaret duo is kicking ass as BJ is totally inept at bridge. The whole unit watches and bets on the pairs. Potter wins and gloats on Winchester. Margaret is miffed that Potter is not giving her any credit and BJ is pissed at hearing curses from Winchester. Margaret partners with Winchester and BJ teams up with Potter. Potter ups the ante to say that the losers serve the winners breakfast in bed. Winchester tries to give Margaret bidding signals via his legs, but Margaret thinks he is hitting on her and slaps him right across the face. BJ and Margaret want to walk out as their partners insult them, but are convinced to play on with Potter and Winchester on one side and BJ and Margaret on the other. BJ and Margaret win big as Potter and Winchester's egos cancel each other out.
Hawkeye returns to MASH 4077, while Potter and Winchester have to serve breakfast in bed to the winners for a week
