- BJ and Hawkeye are outraged and start hatching a plot when they hear about a bigoted field commander Major Weems (Tom Atkins), who sends his black soldiers into more hazardous duty than his white soldiers. Weems commands an unit of the Army combat engineers who have to establish infrastructure (like bridges) in dangerous places, surrounded by enemy troops. His unit has many wounded at the 4077. A black guy named Dorsey and A white one named Sturdivant. Weems wants to send Dorsey (Larry Fishburne) back home (while he has a minor injury) and wants Sturdivant back into the unit, even though he is heavily injured.
Weems tells Hawkeye that Dorsey is a farm guy and is needed back home, but when Hawkeye talks to Dorsey he learns that he is from Brooklyn (Weems was lying). Dorsey isn't very thrilled about Weems either, but refuses to elaborate any further. BJ and Hawkeye discuss that this being a racial thing doesn't even make sense. Sending Dorsey home is the biggest favor Weems can do for him. BJ and Hawkeye check around and figure out that 11% of Weems unit are native Americans and suffer 46% of the casualties. Yet all the MASHes talk about how great Weems is and how concerned for his soldiers. They escalate this to Potter. Potter, BJ and Hawkeye lay a trap for Weems. They lure Weems to the Swamp and share drinks with him and pretend to be native Americans haters. Potter says Weems needs to fair and send some of the white boys home as well. Weems reveals that he deliberately gives native Americans high risk assignments as that way they earn points faster and rotate back home or get killed. Either way, he is rid of them. He doesn't want to eat, sleep or fight with them.
Potter reveals that Major Quentin Rockingham (Jason Bernard) from I Corps Chief of Staff has listened in on their conversation. Ruckingham calls Weems a bigot. Ruckingham forces seems to face court martial or resign his commission on the spot. Weems is cornered and resigns on the spot. Turns out Quentin was only a Captain and the whole thing was a bluff, which Weems didn't catch.
