- Barnaby's new Sergeant arrives on the day after the murder of a local shrew occurs, and he is immediately put to work.
- After a quarrel with her husband at the Midsomer Mallow residents association's Spanish Evening, Fiona Thompson walks home, but never arrives. She is found the next morning in Chaney's Field, having been stabbed to death. Barnaby investigates with his new Detective Sergeant, Dan Scott, in tow. An early suspect is the village odd job man, Jacob Stoat. Cully Barnaby meanwhile organizes a get-together with some old school friends, one of whom is the dead woman's neighbor. She finds that her friends have changed and that they now have little in common. A second murder during the village's open garden day leads the police to a secret shared by Cully's friends and the identity of the murderer.—garykmcd
- Transferred from London, modest Gavin Troy's urbane, cocky successor DS Daniel Scott arrives in Midsommer, as cranky as mentor DIS Barnaby, having missed his train, and is soon thrust into his first case, unable to settle in. Medical secretary Fiona Thompson is found fatally stabbed, a red rose stuffed in her mouth, after attending a Spanish-theme dance evening in Midsomer Mallow, dragged to Chaney's Field. The following weekend, the retired doctor for whom she had worked for is also murdered during the village's annual garden open day. Barnaby suspects they knew too much from the medical history of villager patients. Third victim is raggedy odd job man Jacob Stoat, a lush burnt alive while sleeping in a wheelbarrow, with a handmade doll that proves an indirect clue. Cully brought to the festival study friends for an ill-planned reunion, including single mother villager Rachael Rose, haughty bully prankster Lynn Spearman and her devoted brother Matthew, herself feeling neglect or even hostility, so studly gentleman 'Dan' gets to rescue her from a pond.fight earning her and Joyce's gratitude plus a dinner after secret disclosure and arrests.—KGF Vissers
- Sergeant Scott arrives from London as Troy's replacement, and goes right to work on the investigation of the brutal killing of a local woman who was not all that well liked.
