Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a large Tipton Art Gallery of sorts, containing dozens of sculptures and other pieces of art. He finds Tipton standing and admiring a medium sized statue. Tipton is nearly hidden behind a pillar with only his left hand visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Pointing to statue on a small table]  Mike, what do you think of this?

Michael Anthony : [Askance]  Quite interesting, sir. Does it have a title?

John Beresford Tipton : The artist called it 'Torment.'

Michael Anthony : [Looking the statue over closely]  Well, I not really sure if the artist really catches the feeling of torment, or...

John Beresford Tipton : The gallery priced it at $2,000.

Michael Anthony : Oh, it's not that good! Who'd pay $2,000 for...

    [Catches himself, sheepishly]

John Beresford Tipton : Yes, I bought it.

Michael Anthony : Well, of course, everyone has his own opinion about art - particularly modern art.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  Quite right, Mike. If we had had the same tastes, the world would run out of chocolate ice cream in a week. There'd be only copies of Rembrandts on all of our walls. Artists would have no new worlds to conquer.

    [Tipton hands envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was Executive Secretary to the late John Beresford Tipton, whose practice it was the bestow gifts of $1,000.000, tax-free. I was also, you might say, the official biographer of the Tipton-made millionaires, carefully chronicling their lives. These accounts were as precious to Mr. Tipton as Silverstone itself. Silverstone - the magnificent 60,000-acre estate in the grand tradition, where he devoted the major part of his time to intellectual pursuits. Of all of his variety of interests, the most searching was his preoccupation with the mystery of man.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Miss Julie Sherman knew quite a few things about modern art. This was part of her job and she also knew who she liked.

  • Michael Anthony : [At the apartment of Julie Sherman]  I was looking for you, Miss Julie Sherman. I just missed you at the gallery and they said I might find you home. I hope you don't mind but it's important.

    [Opens his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. I have something for you: a cashier's check for $1,000,000.

Julie Sherman : A cashier's check for $1,000,000? There is no such thing. That can't be.

Michael Anthony : [Displaying check]  Oh, yes, there is. It's a gift, and the taxes have already been paid.

Julie Sherman : [Takes check]  And you've paid the taxes on it?

Michael Anthony : Well, I negotiated the arrangements. But the money is yours to do with as you please

[Retrieving a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : as long as you just sign this agreement.

Julie Sherman : Why me? What did I do to deserve $1,000,000?

Michael Anthony : I have no idea. But it's yours on the condition that you promise to tell no one the exact amount or the circumstances under which you received it.

Julie Sherman : [Reading from agreement]  'If I reveal, the gift will forfeit and the unspent monies will be reclaimed.' Do you mean all I have to do is not tell anyone?

Michael Anthony : The only exception is your husband.

Julie Sherman : I'm not married.

Michael Anthony : Well, I'm sure you will be one day.

Julie Sherman : I'm sure I will be one day.

    [Signs the agreement]

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

    [Returns pledge to his briefcase]

Julie Sherman : I don't know what to do with it first.

Michael Anthony : The bank is a good first.

    [They laugh]

Michael Anthony : Good bye and good luck.

    [Starts to depart]

Julie Sherman : Good luck? How much more good luck could I ask for?

    [Follows Anthony to the door]

Julie Sherman : Thank you so much, Mr. Anthony. Thank you for going through all the trouble.

[Anthony is in the hallway as she calls after him]

Julie Sherman : Thank your employer who must remain anonymous. Oh, thank you for paying the taxes.

Michael Anthony : [Calling back]  You're very welcome, Miss Sherman.
