Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters an electrical shop on the Silverstone estate to discover Tipton tinkering with a meter. Only Tipton's left hand is visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton indicates the meter]  Mike, did you ever see how these things work?

Michael Anthony : A taxi meter, sir? Well, no, I've never taken one of them apart.

    [Anthony gives a slight smile]

Michael Anthony : But they've certainly taken a lot from me.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  Very interesting how they click off the minutes and the miles, charging for both time and distance. Sometimes, a short ride, a few miles, a few minutes can change a person's entire life.

[Tipton pushes a button on the meter and a receipt discharges]

John Beresford Tipton : And now it's time to pay up.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony smiles and nods]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years before his death, I was fortunate enough to be Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton. John Beresford Tipton, man of many millions and much mystery. This is Silverstone, a 60,000-acre estate he preferred above all of his other properties, where he lived actively with his various interests and pursued his hobbies, one of which was to give away, anonymously and tax-free, one million dollars to people he had never even met.

  • Timothy Mackail : [Anthony approaches a parked taxi with the driver outside]  Taxi, sir?

Michael Anthony : [Indicating the front seat]  May I sit up here?

Timothy Mackail : If you'd rather.

Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the taxi while MacKail opens the driver's side door and prepares to enter. Anthony to MacKail]  I don't want to go anywhere.

Timothy Mackail : Why are you in the cab if you don't want to go anywhere?

Michael Anthony : What I mean is, I'd just like to talk to you for a minute, Mr. MacKail. You are Timothy MacKail?

[MacKail nods and enters the cab]

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony.

[Opens his briefcase and takes out a check]

Michael Anthony : I have something for you.

    [Displaying check]

    Michael Anthony : A cashier's check for $1,000,000.

Taxi Dispatcher : 3569. 3569. Do you read me?

Timothy Mackail : [Speaking over a taxi radio]  I read you.

Taxi Dispatcher : I have a load at 333 South Wellington Drive.

Timothy Mackail : 333 South Wellington Drive. Roger.

Michael Anthony : [Anthony is distressed]  Did she hear me?

Timothy Mackail : No. She can't hear me unless I press this button. And I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you either. Look, why don't you go sit on that park bench? It's not going anywhere.

Michael Anthony : Please, just look at this check.

Timothy Mackail : [to himself]  333 South Wellington Drive.

[Anthony shoves the check in MacKail's face]

    Timothy Mackail : A cashier's check?

    [Anthony nods]

Timothy Mackail : Made out to me?

    [Anthony nods]

Timothy Mackail : One million dollars?

    [Anthony nods vigorously]

Timothy Mackail : And no cents?

    [Anthony nods]

Timothy Mackail : Can I look at it, please?

Michael Anthony : Of course. You can keep it.

    [MacKail takes the check]

Michael Anthony : It's a gift from an anonymous benefactor. And the taxes have been paid.

    [Glancing at taxi radio]

Michael Anthony : Are you sure no one can hear us?

Timothy Mackail : That's the one thing I am sure of.

Michael Anthony : [Reaching into his briefcase and taking out a document]  And there's just one condition attached. You must not tell anyone the amount of this gift or the circumstances under which you received it.

    [MacKail appears dazed]

Michael Anthony : Do you read me?

Timothy Mackail : I read you. One million dollars. I can't tell anyone.

Michael Anthony : Because if you do, any remaining money will be reclaimed. The only exception is you could tell you wife. But I happen to know you are not married. So if you will just sign this paper agreeing to that condition,

    [Offers document for signature]

Michael Anthony : the money is yours to do with as you want.

[MacKail signs, Anthony returns the paper to his briefcase]

Timothy Mackail : What do you do with it

    [the check]

    Timothy Mackail : ?

Michael Anthony : The question is, what do you do with it?

    [Disembarking from the cab]

Michael Anthony : Good bye and good luck.

Timothy Mackail : Can I drive you anywhere?

Michael Anthony : No, I have a car waiting for me.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the Viewers]  Timothy MacKail was a taxi driver by night. By day, he was finishing college on taxi tips and the GI Bill.
