- Michael Anthony: [a nurse escorts Anthony into Dr. Grainger's office, then departs] You are Dr. Olivia L. Grainger?
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: That's right.
- Michael Anthony: My name is Michael Anthony.
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: Well, may I help you?
- Michael Anthony: No, no, I'm feeling fine.
- [Opens his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: And I think you will be, too, when you examine this
- [displays a check]
- Michael Anthony: cashier's check.
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: [Gazing at the check] A million dollars? In my name?
- Michael Anthony: To do with as you please,
- [Withdrawing a paper from his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: as soon as you sign this pledge to the effect that, under penalty of forfeiture, you will not reveal the exact amount of the money or where you got it to anyone, except your husband, in case you marry.
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: But I don't understand. Who would give away a million dollars?
- Michael Anthony: You will never know the identity of your benefactor. That is one of the conditions of this gift.
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: But why me?
- Michael Anthony: I'm sorry, I can't answer that precisely. My employer has given away many millions to people he has chosen and for reasons known only to himself.
- [Offering agreement]
- Michael Anthony: Will you please sign these conditions?
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: [Olivia signs] This is crazy. It's unbelievable.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony reclaims the promise] Thank you. Good day and good luck.
- [Anthony leaves]
- Dr. Olivia Grainger: Goodbye.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters the estate's tack room to discover Tipton seated in a high-backed chair at his desk amidst numerous equine-related items such as figures, statues, photos, bridles and other objects. Only Tipton's left arm is visible to viewers] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike,
- [waving at the objects]
- John Beresford Tipton: these statues represent some of Silverstone's greatest champions. They were all wonderful animals, but in all their grace and beauty, lived by instinct alone. Quite different from some humans who refuse to submit to any of their basic instincts.
- Michael Anthony: That can make for a dull life, sir.
- John Beresford Tipton: [laughs] I wonder what it does to that dull life if such a person is given a million dollars.
- [Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: There's our next millionaire.
- [Anthony accepts the envelope]
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. For years, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton. Mr. Tipton was a man of many unusual attributes. Perhaps his two most unique distinctions were these: He was a multibillionaire; and he would frequently select people to whom he would give, anonymously, one million dollars, tax-free. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre secluded estate. Among the many hobbies he pursued here was the breeding of a fine line of blooded horses. One day, Mr. Tipton asked that I join him in the tack room.
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] Dr. Olivia Grainger had inherited her father's clinic and his dedication to medical science. Her work had made her forget that she was a young and attractive woman.
