- TriviaThis is the episode in which John McIntire's character, Lt. Dan Muldoon, is killed off. McIntire, tired of the outdoor shooting schedule in New York City and longing to return to his family in California, left the program and the producers had his detective character die in a fiery car crash with an oil truck. It is also the first appearance of Horace McMahon as Lt. Mike Parker, Muldoon's successor. McMahon appeared in an early episode as a different character ("Stakeout" #1.6).

I couldn't do it! Not like this! Not with Dan's gun!
****SPOILERS**** While driving a mob witness out of town into protective custody Let. Dan Muldoon's , John McIntire, unmarked police car was driven off the road and crashed into a gasoline truck killing him together the mob witness. It was out of town hit man known as "The Bumper" who was responsible for this outrage and it's Lt. Muldoon's grieving partner and replacement Det. James Halloran & Let. Mike Parker, James Franciscus & Horace McMahon, who are now more then determined to track down "The Bumper" and bring his to justice even if they have to kill him to do it.
It's "The Bumper's" friend and former cell-mate and now garage man Mr. Doyle, Sam Gray, who with some pressure from the NYPD drops a dime on him that leads the cops straight to his front door in a west side flop house in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan that he's hold up in.Realizing that he's been cornered "The Bumper" makes a run for it to the Husdon River docks gunning down three policemen who tried to stop and arrest him.
It's the late Let. Muldoon's Det. partner James Halloran who finally corners the fleeing "Bumper" who ends up neck deep in the ice water of the Hudson River and is about to freeze to death if medical help doesn't arrive on time. With his gun pointed straight at "The Bumper's" head Det. Halloran instead of blowing his brains out waits for back up to arrest him and have "The Bumper" brought before to bar of justice. It was the right-thing to do on Det. Halloran's part and even far more important it was what the late Let. Muldoon would have wanted. What Let. Dan Muldoon or the actor John McIntire who played him really wanted was to get out of his contract on the "Naked City" TV show. And in him being killed off in this episode he got exactly what he wanted.
