Bland episode.
LegendaryFang565 October 2021
After episodes like the previous episode and the one before that, this one paled in comparison. The reasoning behind the victim's death was a bit grim, as were the way elements of how he died. Other than that, the episode was very bland. But the comedic moments, mostly to do with Anthony, were another aspect to the episode not being worse.

And I find it a little ironic how I mentioned that the show hasn't seemed to hit its stride yet in my review of the previous episode, and then this episode ended up being the weakest one so far. That would've been better off being mentioned in this review instead.

But regardless of this particular episode, I'm sure it's among the minority when it comes to weak episodes like this one: not just in this first season alone but throughout the entire show. Despite that, I hope most of those episodes aren't bunched up together in a season; and are more spread out.

That's pretty much it. I know my review for this episode is shorter than my reviews for the previous episodes were: but it's to be expected given that this episode was pretty bland: and weak. But there were still levels of enjoyment to this episode. And that was due to the characters, the comedic moments with each other, and their dynamics. I also feel like that's going to be one of the hugest parts of this show. I'm a fan of those three elements already.

A lot of mistakes

Warning: Spoilers
Mistakes all over this episode.

As others have pointed out, the ship is supposed to be a Spruance-class destroyer, but long exterior shots are of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

A seaman (E-3) would never have a middle rack (bunk). The petty officer who showed Jethro the seaman's rack consequently would not have had the rack above the seaman's. Higher ranking petty officers get the more desirable middle racks. Neck in line would get the bottom racks. Lowest ranking get the top racks. The seaman would have had a top rack.

The victim would not have been a regular seaman with no rating and be working in CIC (Combat Information Center). They clearly show his patch in several shots. He would have been assigned to something like the deck department. An E-3 in CIC would most likely be an OS (Operations Specialist) and have the patch of an OSSN.

Real navy officer swords can be purchased online by anyone with the money, except maybe in certain areas where any such kind of weapon is prohibited by local laws. You don't need to go to a Navy Exchange and show an officer's ID card.

I don't know about the fictitious ship in this episode, but on the ship I was on, anyone could have a legal and registered weapon stored on board. The Gunner's Mates would just keep them locked up in an armory, and you would have to go through them to access it. We had guys that had personal weapons onboard.

OK. These are examples of the mistakes in this episode, and I'm only half-way through the episode so far!

Not very good at all

Warning: Spoilers
"NCIS" has had its fair share of mediocre and terrible episodes. "The Immortals" is the first entry of this wonderful series, where I felt unsatisfied by the story. It's not a terrible episode, but manages to be lacklustre at best.

Let's start with the good aspects.

. The production values of the episode are great. I enjoyed the music and the performances.

. The story, while not great, is entertaining for the most part. There are relatable themes touched upon and the humor is suitably wry.

But...

. The direction is not always seemless ( the wide angles of the ship were not sadly not believable). The characters are uninteresting for the most part and the solution is hard to grasp. The dialogue is quite exposition heavy, coming off unnatural. Most of all: the story at times beggars belief.

Overall, not a very good episode at all.

4/10 HK.

Ship mid-identified

Kate said the ship was a Spruance class destroyer but it was actually USS Arleigh Burke DDG-51, the first of that new class.

I was a Adam's class DDG sailor in the early 1970s, serving in USS Barney DDG-6.

There is in some episodes a Spruance class destroyer moored at the Navy Yard near NCIS headquarters.
