This documentary on restoring ruins in Tiber was interesting. I found especially interesting how difficult it is to rein in attempts at over restoring things.
The King and people of this part of Nepal... may think they want a brand new Disney World recreation of their frescoes but they do so only because of lack of sophistication. No tourist will want to see that.
I thought the solutions the foreign restorers came up with were good-- using water colors and shading in cracks etc...
It comes to mind that during the 30s Mussolini prettied up Roman ruins-- some say too much.
One thing that struck me is what a pity the Chinese communists had control of Tibet...they really ruined treasures during the 50s and 60s when they were out of control. Simalarly vandals or Muslim knocked the noses and private parts off Roman statues. And more recently the Taliban blew up ancient Buddhas--organized religion and political ideology is so narrow minded.
