Christmas Special: Part 1 (#3.1)
ComedyFan201026 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Three years after the Office documentary was filmed a reunion is done. David is now sales rep for a cleaning company. Dawn and Lee live in Florida, the filming crew offers to pay for them to come back for reunion. Neil is getting married and David needs to find a date.

A very fun reunion episode. The single that David produced was a hilarious idea. I was laughing a lot watching that video. His celebrity appearances were also top humor. Just as him and Gareth making his dating profile.

Looking forward to see the very final episode of that reunion. And is it maybe still possible for at least Dawn and Tim to have a happy ending?

If you don't know'em by now...

Most of the time, reunion episodes, or similar, are interpreted as cynical cash-ins on the original series. The two-part Christmas Special of The Office, originally broadcast on Christmas Day 2003, could have been just that - after all, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant wrapped up the story rather satisfyingly in the twelfth (and last) regular episode. And then the miracle happened: an afterthought it may have been, but the Special is actually the best episode of the series.

It's been three years since the BBC camera crew visited the Wernham Hogg office in Slough and showed the documentary series on TV. Now they're back for one final visit, the occasion being the office's Christmas party. Gareth (MacKenzie Crook) is now the regional manager, working under Neil Godwin's strict supervision and running the building with his typical military insanity. Nonetheless, Tim (Martin Freeman) keeps pulling pranks on him, although it's not the same since Dawn (Lucy Davis) moved to Florida with Lee. Imagine his reaction, then, when he learns the BBC is actually arranging for her and Lee to come back to Slough for the party.

And what of good old David Brent (Gervais), who was last seen begging Neil to let him keep his job? Well, he advertises cleaning products now, and uses his free time to visit the old workplace, despite filing a successful lawsuit for his unfair firing. Because of the success of the (fictional) Office series, he's also a minor celebrity, making various appearances on TV shows. And finally, he recorded his own pop single, an awful cover of "If You Don't Know Me By Now", a brief glimpse of which features in the episode as a music video (the full version, should anyone be brave enough to watch it, is available on the DVD). How wrong could things still get? Since it's Brent, the answer has to be: very, very wrong.

Besides the usual cold, cruel realism, the Christmas Special is noteworthy for adding a certain postmodern playfulness. Specifically, several characters comment on the fact that they are now well known to the general public thanks to the show, which is exactly what we (the real audience) got to enjoy for two years. The best remark is of course the one that comes from Brent, who claims the BBC edited out his good moments and only showed his bad side (go figure...). As usual, Gervais' performance is the most enjoyable, and the new stages his role is going through suggest things will get really interesting when the real end finally comes around.

The Office Xmas Specials 26th & 27th December 2003

After 12 cringe inducing but genius funny episodes, The Office closed down with a two part Xmas Special. Thankfully it turned out to be a fitting closure. We catch up with the departed employees who are destined to end up at the Wernham Hogg Xmas party. As we head towards that night we are introduced to more cringe worthy sequences involving the deluded Brent, the lovelorn waste that is Tim and Dawn and Gareth's power trip. Internet dating figures prominently and brings superb comedy scenes that are typically tinged with sadness. Then the party begins and some home truths are said, some backbones are shown, and finally us fans get the punch the air moment we always hoped we would get. Brilliant. 10/10

Christmas Special: Part 1
Prismark1029 December 2022
I never really got into the cringe inducing The Office. At least Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant knew it was time to call it a day after series 2 with the two part Christmas specials.

Unlike the The Office in the USA which went on for years and years.

After three years, the BBC documentary crew return to the office for an update. Gareth Keenan is now in charge, he does not have Brent's humour but is still rubbish as a manager. Maybe Gervais and Merchant were having a dig at British management styles, not matter who the personnel are, they still do not know what they are doing.

As for David Brent, he is now a lowly sales rep but cannot resist popping down to the office to see his old chums. Whether Gareth likes it or not.

Brent got a big payout from the company after winning an unfair dismissal case. He spent it all on making a flop pop record.

As for Tim he plays pranks on Gareth and is still trying to get over Dawn who might be flying over from Florida.

If Martin Freeman provides the heart. It is still left to Gervais with the nauseating humour. Brent just does not realise when to stop. Just watch when Brent makes a personal appearance in a Blind Date type show.

If you loved The Office this could be the funniest thing ever, I thought it had a few funny moments.
