I've said on many an occasion that One foot in the Grave is one of my very favourite sitcoms, mainly because it combines out and out fun and laughter, with sadness, seriousness, and an often black humour. Those elements are showcased wonderfully well in this episode.
It truly boasts a wealth of original funny ideas, and a tonne of wonderful surrealism. The Garden gnomes provide true belly laughs, that wonderful line 'it's like sleeping in Snow White's Cottage.' Patrick's frustration and subsequent gunning down of them. There's the sad realisation of a vicar who's lost his faith, and there's the utter tragedy of the woman who's lost her husband, and then there's that tear jerking ending.
No wonder it's so highly regarded, this is pure brilliance. I defy anyone who can't laugh at this 9/10
