Kay Medford and Gerald Hiken
kevinolzak4 March 2014
"In 25 Words or Less" guest stars Kay Medford as Gloria Neugast, the winner of a contest sponsored by Reuben which allows her to spend a week at the Partridge home, even accompanying them to the recording studio. Perennially cast as Jewish mothers, the Irish-born Medford is as always a delight, sticking her nose in everyone's business, and bringing home Gerald Hiken's Dr. Bernie Applebaum (back in "Aspirin at 7, Dinner at 8"), an unmarried bachelor doctor, who thrills poor Shirley with his three years in medical school. She apologetically unleashes an understandable yawn, which the doctor easily brushes aside, knowing it's "indicative of a lack of oxygen," and unwittingly adding "oh, a lot of people yawn when I'm around, I must use up a lot of oxygen!" The featured song is a treat, "Echo Valley 2-6809" (from the third LP SOUND MAGAZINE), composed by Kathy Cooper and Rupert Holmes, who later scored hits of his own in 1979-80 with "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)," "Him," and "Answering Machine."
