- Season 1 Episode 38 The Portrait Prologue: Two guys break into an artist's home studio, while looking for the work they desire, the owner wakes from the couch, tells them to cease and desist at gunpoint, but is shot regardless, as one standing behind the other draws and fires his revolver, killing the artist and escaping with the portrait. A client stops by Pete's, hands him an envelope of cash, says the painting stolen from the killed artist is what she seeks, as she is married to a public figure, and was having an affair with the artist and the painting is a portrait of her. Plus, she rather Pete rely on her appearance than give her name. Pete is with Edie on the terrace saying he needs to find a painting, and at Luther's he meets up free-spirit Sabrina, who directs him to Wilbur's for any and all of Luther's paintings. Wilbur says Shaw and Maddox wanted to buy the painting for $500 if he could locate same. Capri is present at Wilbur's and still not a speaking part; just thought I would mention her again. Pete knows the unsavory Shaw and Maddox and goes to see them. They stole the painting and killed the owner, telling Pete, Elsa Keys is the name of the woman in the painting. Pete says he'll be back with the money, $10,000, for the painting. Pete sits with Elsa at Mother's saying these men won't accept credit, as she can only come up with $2,000. Pete also tells her the men selling the painting gave Pete her name as the woman in the portrait. She says her husband is State Senator Keyes, whereby Pete sees scandal and another party to be found involved in this sordid deal. Pete checks in on Babby, Frankie Barber, crooked contractor, is the likely buyer with Pete. Seeing Frankie at the Shaw and Maddox locale, bidding is about to start with Pete's $10,000, Frankie raises it to $11,000, where it starts to go up. Pete says the bribery of a senator for building contracts could be in the $4,000,000 range, when Frankie pulls his gun, shooting Maddox, running to the door, shoots Shaw, escaping to the next room, painting in hand, shooting back at Pete, he makes his exit out of the warehouse. He runs to his car, turns at the warehouse, when Pete jumps in the convertible. Frankie crashes into freight cartons, Pete slugs him, hands him over the waiting police and retrieves the painting.
