The detectives as 4 King 61 get dispatched to Ballard and Humboldt twice several minutes apart, with each time being "Code 2". The first time they are shown making a quick turn and driving at high speed. The second time is after the patrol car calls in the location and they are shown just casually driving as if the first call never came in. They are then again shown driving at high speed.
The detectives lament that they cannot prosecute the men for the several murders, and observe they are willing to admit to robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Several felony charges are overlooked here, such as two counts of kidnapping, attempted rape, and possession of firearms by convicted felons. Based upon their criminal records that had been stated earlier, both men would receive lengthy prison sentences just for these charges. The detectives could continue to investigate the murders while both were in prison. Additionally, there would have been a wealth of fingerprint evidence at the restaurant where the blonde waitress was kidnapped after the family ate there, as neither man wore gloves.
