"LaRue!"
planktonrules25 January 2014
This episode of "Racket Squad" is well worth seeing for one reason--to hear a very funny goof. Actor Jack LaRue stars as a guy named Lou Christy (not to be confused with Lou Christie the 1960s singer). However, when he enters an apartment, the old guy greeting him responds "LaRue!" when he goes through the doorway! I am very surprised that they didn't catch this mistake...and it made me laugh.

The show begins with Captain Braddock meeting with an ex-con, Jess Cordell. Cordell has managed to stay out of trouble and straighten his life out, but Braddock is worried about Cordell's old cell-mate, Lou Christy. It seems that Christy has been living quite high on the hog and Braddock asks Cordell to keep his eyes and ears open.

Some time later, Christy approaches Cordell about what he claims is a legitimate job. Cordell is an artist and Christy wants him to paint a picture of his uncle as a surprise. Cordell agrees but after he finishes, he finds out that the picture is NOT Christy's uncle but a rich guy who died just a few days earlier. Cordell realizes what Christy is going to do with the painting (a variation of the Bible scam from "Paper Moon")--to sell the painting to the grieving widow at an inflated cost--and claiming that her dead husband had ordered the picture. Considering how sad the wife is, he's really taking advantage of her--but, as usual, Braddock is there to catch him--which he almost always seems to do in the last minutes of each episode.

Despite the silly slip, this is a pretty good episode. Informative and interesting--it's well worth seeing and has aged pretty well.

A Painter's Brush with the Law
wes-connors6 March 2010
Picked up as a drunk, engraver and ex-con Roy Regnier (as Jess Cordell) is recruited from a police line-up, by Captain Braddock (Reed Hadley), to help investigate a former cell-mate, racketeer Jack LaRue (as Lou Christy). Braddock suspects Mr. LaRue, driving a flashy new car, is up to no good. LaRue and statuesque blonde moll Adele Jergens (as Virginia Christy) coerce vulnerable Mr. Regnier into using his artistic skills to scam wealthy widows. Betty Blythe, who made a big impression as "The Queen of Sheba" (1921), appears as the bilked Mrs. Burton. This episode shows some strained credulity.
