About halfway through the episode, you see Tully working on the front axle joint. The jeep has been turned up on the driver's side to allow him to work on it. It was not uncommon for GI's to do this when having to work on the underside of the jeep.
The German armored vehicles in the opening sequence are actually American M7 self-propelled howitzers (aka "Priests") modified with roofs to cover the ordinarily open tops of the design.
