- Gil Favor: I got a cousin, woman, teaches in a school house back East. She tells me those boys daydream about becomin' cowboys. Of all the jobs a man could pick, why'd he ever want to choose this way to make a livin'? Three thousand head of God's lowest form of life, cattle. If they don't die of rick fever, strangle in a dust storm or trample their fool selves to death, then the market'll go gown to two cents a pound on the hoof. They might as well have died before we set out. But they need food back East. It's my job to get this herd movin'. My name's Gil Favor, trail boss.
- Rowdy Yates: What happens if you wake up some morning and find him gone. And half the herd with him.
- Gil Favor: I doubt it. Not the way he handles cattle. He hasn't done anything except cover his face. No law against that.
- Wishbone: When a man covers his face, it's either because of something he's done, or something he's gonna do.
- Lance Ford: Working for Slate Brell? Is that where you're going?
- Brazo Ford: Well, what if it is?
- Brazo Ford: Now, you listen to me. You let this eat at you until it's all out of size. Other people don't think about it the way you do. To them a scar's a scar. Now you still got to be a man. A scar don't drive a man to hire out his gun.
- Lance Ford: I'll make out. You did. You made a good life for Ma, for Pa, and me.
- Brazo Ford: Maybe. But I knew who worked for Slate Prell. I kept turning him down.
- Lance Ford: Man's got a spread to run, that's all. Needs help.
- Brazo Ford: Like he did in East Texas? Night riding, cutting fences, burning out his neighbours. That's right? Gunning 'em, stealing all their stock he could get his hands on.
- Marshal Tobin: We got no room for trouble here.
- Gil Favor: Mister, a good way not to start it, is not to mention it.
- Brazo Ford: Well, I'm gonna go now, Ranie.
- Rainy Dawson: Please don't. He was just the first. There'll be more, lots more. You won't have a chance.
- Brazo Ford: Well, I guess a man always has a chance.
- Brazo Ford: You know, Slate, I used to hear folks claim that a snake'd never travel more than a mile from where it was hatched. But they must've been wrong. You was hatched a long way from here, wasn't you?
- Rainy Dawson: He'll come back. He's hurt. He's going away for the hurt to heal. He'll come back, I know he will.
- Gil Favor: No, you only get one time around. Brazo, you had no way of knowing how it was going to work out. Anybody can tell who won the last hands, the cards are right there on the table. But at the time you gotta play 'em blind. Just by guess.
- Gil Favor: Rowdy, easy on him. He's younger and more inexperienced than you. If that's possible.
- Rowdy Yates: Yessir.
- Lance Ford: He come up on this drive lookin' for me.
- Brazo Ford: You talk too much.
- Gil Favor: You don't talk enough, Brazo.
- Brazo Ford: Easy now, Mr Favor.
- Gil Favor: Maybe Brazo is short to Bronson. That right?
- Brazo Ford: Maybe.
- Gil Favor: Hired gunfighter in the Fence Wars in East Texas. Pretty well known a few years back. Worked for both sides at different times. Real successful. What's a gunfighter doing interested in this boy?
