- Lab security is compromised, records destroyed, morphine is being stolen and a staff physician is missing. Ms. Holt and Mr. Steele infiltrate a hospital sleep clinic as physician and insomniac to solve the mysteries.
- Laura () surprises Remington () in the act of cooking dinner for her, bringing a Dr. Lindstrom () in tow. He explains that he is conducting a sleep study and that drugs recently have gone missing and records have been destroyed, but he has not contacted the police in the interest of the research. However, another doctor, Sheila Marcus (), has gone missing, and he requests their assistance. At Laura's suggestion, she and Remington go undercover at the hospital, with her as a doctor and him as an insomniac patient. Once there, Remington meets a no-nonsense nurse, Blackwell (), and Laura meets a Dr. Wicker (), who has heard of the famous detective agency. Remington then meets his roommate, Bickerman (), an overly chatty man who also has insomnia, as well as Ivan (), who is a "sleeper," or narcoleptic. Late at night, Laura and Remington meet in a lab where cadavers are stored for study and discover Marcus' body hidden there, with strangulation marks visible. Ivan suddenly appears and blurts out that he did it before passing out. When he awakens, he says that he found Marcus' bloodied lab coat under his arm and explains that he suffers hallucinations and night terrors and believes he killed her in his sleep with realizing. Laura notes that Marcus suffered no bleeding injuries, however, and Remington, still pretending to be a patient, charms a nurse, Rhona (), into analyzing the bloodstains on the coat.
Laura asks the other doctors if a patient with Ivan's symptoms could have been violent while unconscious, and then questions Ivan about what he remembers from that night, but he can only recall the sense of being attacked and possibly fighting back. Remington meets Dr. Wicker, who offers a "second opinion," but then mentions that Lindstrom's experiment is failing and says he wants to open his own sleep clinic, endorsed by Remington's famous name. Elsewhere, Laura meets with Bickerman and pretends to run tests on him, and he reveals that he was up for a big promotion at work but denied because of his sleep problem. Studying Ivan's sleep record, Laura and Remington note that there is a half an hour "gap" in brain activity on the night in question, meaning he must have left the room. However, that does not explain the missing morphine, and they wonder if Nurse Blackwell is involved. As Laura works at night, she hears strange noises and senses someone following her, although she meets only Rhona, who gives her the blood test results. Laura tells Remington that Ivan cannot be guilty because the blood on the jacket matches neither him nor Marcus; unbeknownst to them, Marcus accidentally crushed a bag of blood in her hand whilst being strangled.
Remington breaks into Dr. Wicker's locker and finds Marcus' stethoscope as well as a photo of Marcus and Lindstrom, and it is revealed that they were having an affair. They guess that the stethoscope may have been the murder weapon. That night, as Blackwell conducts further tests on Remington, he experiments with unplugging the machines, which causes a gap in the records. Laura searches for Wicker and is nearly strangled from behind. She stabs her assailant with a syringe, but when Remington arrives, they find Wicker dead in the room with scissors in his chest. Laura swears she did not kill him, and they realize that Wicker did not kill Marcus. Remington, believing he has the answer, breaks into a lab with Ivan's help as Laura questions Blackwell, and they find discrepancies in other charts. Remington and Laura stake out the lab at night as Remington struggles to stay awake, and they flirt over his attempts at cooking for her. Suddenly, the culprit enters, and they catch him: Bickerman. They accuse him of being a drug addict who needs a clean bill of health for his promotion, saying he killed Marcus and Wicker to prevent their discovery of his theft and framed Ivan, and he says that he became addicted to painkillers after an injury on the job. He attempts to flee, but they catch him with Ivan's help. Later, they all have dinner with Dr. Lindstrom, who says that Bickerman's company gave the clinic a big donation as amends for the scandal. Remington admits that he has had trouble sleeping ever since his stay in the hospital, but Laura assists him with a kiss.
