And I fell into the beckoning vortex." which mirrors the writing of Raymond Chandler in his 1940 novel, Farewell, My Lovely (chapter 24): "A pool of darkness opened at my feet and was far, far deeper than the blackest night. I dived into it. It had no bottom."
