Up until the late 1970s the Federal government got rid of old worn out currency by burning it in giant incinerators. It was eventually decided that the exhaust of the burnt money exceeded pollution guidelines. The government spent millions of dollars on new equipment to shred the money which was then used as recycled material like insulation. One entrepreneur bought tons of the shredded money and then resold it as a gimmick, claiming that each sack he sold for a couple of dollars was guaranteed to contain at least ten thousand dollars of shredded currency.
