Bobby Bittman upstaged by Ben Vereen
Jimmy_the_Gent425 October 2018
A great episode with the main story being Bittman quitting show business after having to take second billing to musical guest Ben Vereen.

It begins with Shower In A Briefcase, one of the funniest commercials ever. Martin Short hails a cab and is totally covered with mud. His briefcase has a water gushing out of it and a blow dryer which sends him rolling down the street. Steve Roman plugs another show as he fights in Afghanistan with the Kurds.

We see Bittman meeting with Vereen at the rehearsal hall. Vereen tells him that they met many times before but Bobby doesn't remember. Vereen performs The Joint Is Jumpin' and becomes a big hit. Bobby can't quiet down the crowd after Ben leaves the stage and starts yelling at the audience. Bobby is told that he will have to take second billing and he announces his retirement. Ben (who is taking his role very seriously here) cries when Bobby leaves.

There is a great Farm Film Report with Bernadette Peters (Andrea Martin). Andrea is hilarious in her pouting impression. Big Jim and Billy Sol tell her to start a-poutin' and a-bawlin' when she sings a song and blow up for them. She does. Ed Grimley has a funny movie promo where he plays Billy The Kid.

There is a TV news show spoof where Bittman is interviewed in retirement. There are some funny scenes where he gets introspective and then complains about farm life.

Masterpiece Theatre has 3 scenes with Dutch Leonard. One has her playing Alice B Toklas to Pat Carroll (John Candy!) as Gertrude Stein. Another as she is in an English men's club and the final one as tennis player chasing a female around in Benny Hill style.

We then see the first episode of The William B Show, he enters and smashes right into the camera and breaks his ankle, his monologue then bombs. His only guest is Irving Cohen, a cranky 85 year old songwriter (Short) who berates William for leaving Sammy Maudlin. Then Maudlin himself crashes the show and takes over which cause William to walk off again.

The Days Of The Week has Dr Sabian telling May that she has mental problems. Wainwright tries to poison Rocco. Funniest scenes are Mojo trying desperately to get Billy to notice her, he fires her.

We see a promo of Bobby with his new special, his retirement did not last long. Short has a funny commercial of Shirt Glue which cures any shirt tail from hanging out.

The final scene is a Sunrise Semester with Andrea playing a actress who shows you how to communicate using your hands.
