SCTV tries for big ratings

It's sweeps week and the station is invaded by a poltergeist.

A good episode with a story line running all the all the way through it. Guy is first talking about how sweeps week works, putting on a bunch of ratings grabbing shows to become the number 1 network.

There are promos for Jumping For Dollars in which women in T shirts jump up and down to grab dollar bills and The Dallas Cowgirls Salute Aaron Copland.

The long sketch is Night Of The Prime Time Stars with Merlin Olsen (John Candy) an ex-NFL player now appearing in the show Father Murphy, M*A*S*H star Jamie Farr (Martin Short), Linda Lavin (Andrea Martin) singer and star of sitcom Alice, former Bonanza star Lorne Greene (Eugene Levy) and Gavin MacLoed (Joe Flaherty) formerly of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and now on The Love Boat.

While the show is in rehearsal, Ed Grimley is wandering around and nearly gets electrocuted in the main control room. A flashing ball comes out and turns into Jackie Gleason (Candy), then Ed disappears and becomes stuck in a TV monitor. The same thing happens to Gus, he is visited by Arlene Francis (Andrea).

We get a promo for The Long Hard War, a send up of The Winds Of War, but this one is only concerned with sex for sweeps week. Funniest is John Candy as a Nazi who wants to be spanked.

The Days Of The Week finds May afraid of bacteria. Wainwright recalls his first meeting with Rocco. Then Rocco escapes from prison and threatens Billy and Mojo.

We get some funny scenes of Jamie Farr and Merlin Olsen trying to do the Abbott and Costello Susquehanna Hat sketch. Merlin slugs Jamie and knocks him out. Linda Lavin is bothered by the orchestra during her song. Lorne Greene tries some dirty limericks. Gavin MacLeod just keeps saying how lucky he is.

Murray's File is a talk show with Levy playing the host, his guests are the honchos of all the networks. The one from NBC is taken by the poltergeist.

Guy is scared so he calls in the Zelda Rubinstein character (Andrea) from Poltergeist. She solves the problem or does she?
