This episode predicted the Joan Jett of the future!

I finally saw this SNL episode on December 4th, 2021, and wow what a hoot!

This one does drag in some places, and the first thing I noticed that bugged me a bit was that the famous catchphrase "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" was not shouted during the opening segment. While I'm not an SNL expert by any means, I do know that the show is known for that. But, aside from that and other very minor irritations, this episode is a gem for several reasons.

I loved seeing Gwyneth hosting at the very peak of her popularity, and she did a pretty fabulous job with all the sketches. The impeachment segment with her as Sharon Stone was super nostalgic for any 90s kid, and the Joan Rivers mention, with an SNL cast member there as Melissa Rivers was a true treat.

Speaking of people named Joan, Gwyneth nailed her segment as Joan Jett! Some JJ fans took offence at this, thinking that it was making fun of Joan. But it's SNL, no-one is safe from mockery there, and if you aren't mocked by them at some point, then are you even famous at all?! Anyway, Gwyneth was great as Joan, and not sure how she and the SNL people did it, but they managed to channel the Joan of the future! Cause this episode aired in 1999, when Joan had a totally different look than the one Gwyneth had when she was impersonating her. In fact, that had never been Joan's look up to that point- even though it was unmistakably Joan in the skit. Yet, it's the look Joan actually ended up with later on (2013-14 ish). So, maybe Joan watched and thought yeah! I like that look! After all, she is an SNL fan.

One can really tell Gwyneth is a rock n' roll and music fan, with all the related segments in her episode here. Good episode with lots of pop-cultural highlights and references that will peak any 90s person's memory, and entertain all.
