- To get out of public service cleaning up with the other members of the Power Plant, Homer fakes his death.
However, this soon leads to a number of complications, such as the power being shut off, and Marge tells Homer to fix it.
Homer goes down to City Hall, where his status as deceased is reversed to living. However, he claims that the information in the system saying his Mother is still alive is wrong, and mentions how there is a stone angel in the nearby cemetery that his father said was his mother's grave.
At the insistence of the City Hall representative, Homer goes to the Angel statue, only to find the tomb of Walt Whitman. However, he soon encounters an old woman, and realizes it is his Mother!
Homer's Mother eagerly helps around the Simpson household, but Lisa soon finds that her wallet contains numerous false ID's, and suspects Mrs Simpson isn't who she says she is.
After some arm-twisting, Homer's Mother relates her past.
During the 60's, she was enamored with the rebellious spirit of the country's youth (unlike her husband, who was more straight-laced). Mrs Simpson helped a young group of students destroy the work in Mr Burn's germ lab on the Springfield University campus. An upside was the gas used to destroy the germs, also helped clear up the asthma of student security officer, Clancy Wiggum.
In the aftermath, Mr Burns attempted to stop the students, but was knocked down. Mrs Simpson attempted to help him, but this caused her to be seen by Burns, who declared that he would have her locked up for what she did.
This was the reason why Mrs Simpson ran away, and Homer and the family are willing to put the past behind them.
However, upon going to the post office, Mr Burns recognizes Mrs Simpson, and starts a search to find her and have her arrested. However, the Simpsons are tipped off by an anonymous caller, and Homer and his Mother escape to the Springfield Badlands, where a group of hippies is waiting to take her to a safe place.
It also turns out that the tipster was Chief Wiggum, who did so because Mrs Simpson's actions in college, helped clear up the asthma that was keeping him out of the Police Academy.
Mrs Simpson soon after gets in a VW bus, and says her goodbyes to Homer. Homer quietly watches her go, and as afternoon turns to evening, he sits on the hood of his car, watching the stars.
