Starting with this episode Julie Bennett takes over the role of Aunt May Parker from Linda Gary who had passed away. Benett had previously filled in as Aunt May in Partners in Danger Chapter 1: Guilty (1997) for Gary.
Through the episode Harry Osborn is haunted by the image of the original Green Goblin, his father Norman Osborn. It is ambiguous whether the original Green Goblin was contacting Harry from another dimension or the grief of losing his father drove him insane to please Broadcast Standards & Practices. In the comics it was absolutely clear that Harry had completely lost mind.
Harry Osborn was haunted by dreams of the Green Goblin and Spider-Man turning into Man-Spider. Harry defended Mary Jane Watson from the Man-Spider in Neogenic Nightmare Chapter 8: Duel of the Hunters (1995).
In this episode, Harry Osborn takes over the mantle of the Green Goblin in an effort to avenge the loss of his father at the hands of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. This is just like the comics when Harry took over in "The Amazing Spider-Man" (Vol. 1) #136-137 which most of this episode is based on.
The Punisher returns in this episode after last being seen in Neogenic Nightmare Chapter 8: Duel of the Hunters (1995). This is similar to the comics when he returned in "The Amazing Spider-Man" (Vol. 1) #135, however that comic was the issue before the return of the Green Goblin when the Punisher and Spider-Man worked together against The Tarantula.
