- An apparently insane Capt. Kirk has the Enterprise deliberately enter the Romulan Neutral Zone where the ship is immediately captured by the enemy.
- The Enterprise deliberately crosses the Neutral Zone, on Kirk's orders, into Romulan space and is promptly surrounded by Romulan warships, each equipped with a "cloaking device" that renders it undetectable. Spock betrays the apparently irrational and paranoid Kirk to the Romulan commander, a woman who is obviously attracted to Spock. A deadly game between Kirk, Spock and the Romulans risks not only the Enterprise but the tenuous cease-fire between the Romulans and the Federation.—Tom D.
- An erratic Captain Kirk orders the Enterprise into the Romulan Neutral Zone where they are quickly surrounded by three Romulan warships. Kirk and Spock beam aboard one of the Romulan vessels to meet their commander who accuses them of espionage. The attractive Romulan takes an interest in Spock and she sets about wooing him. Spock is apparently prepared to cooperate with their captors and accuses Captain Kirk of having gone insane. In fact, Kirk and Spock are on a special mission and operating under Federation orders.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise deliberately crosses the Neutral Zone, on Kirk's orders (who is increasingly irritable and rude with his crew), into Romulan space and is promptly surrounded by Romulan warships (now using Klingon designs), each equipped with a "cloaking device" that renders it undetectable (which means Romulans could be deep inside federation space without them knowing about it till ROmulans mount an attack). The Romulans want Kirk to surrender and don't destroy the enterprise. Kirk surmises that the Romulans want the Enterprise.
Romulans invite Kirk and Spock over to their ships to negotiate a surrender. Before leaving, Kirk orders Scott not to surrender the ship and destroy it, if defeat is certain. Spock betrays the apparently irrational and paranoid Kirk to the Romulan commander (Joanne Linville), a woman who is obviously attracted to Spock. In isolated questioning Kirk had claimed that Enterprise entered ROmulan space due to a navigational error. But the commander thinks the Starship was on a spy mission to detect new tech that Romulans have developed. She traps Kirk, when she asks Spock the same question and He tells the Commander how Kirk has been agitated for weeks now. He reveals Kirk ordered the Enterprise into the ROmulan space for his own glory.
The commander charges Kirk with espionage. She announces that Kirk will be held in confinement till his trial and orders Scott to follow the Romulans to their home-base for processing and release into Starfleet command. Scott refuses to move. Meanwhile commander plays on Spocks mind by offering him his own ship under Romulan flag. But Spock counters by saying that it is the commander who desires the Enterprise. McCoy has to beam on-board the Romulan flagship, when Kirk is injured trying to escape his captivity. The commander brings Spock and McCoy together and gets McCoy to state that Kirk is physically exhausted and mentally depressed. She uses this as a pretext to get Spock to assume command of the Enterprise, as he is the second in command. Kirk attacks Spock and he says he used the Vulcan Death grip to thwart Kirk's attack, as Kirk dies.
McCoy takes Kirk back to the Enterprise. Turns out Spock only gave Kirk a nerve pinch to simulate death. As The Commander continues to seduce Spock, Kirk gets McCoy to alter his physical features to like that of a ROmulan and gets a ROmulan uniform to beam back aboard their ship. The commander wants Spock to help her gain control of the Enterprise and take it to a ROmulan home-base. Spock plays along and asks her to change her dress. Then he calls Kirk and tells him the location of the cloaking device. But the ROmulans intercept the communication between Kirk and Spock and trace it to the Commander's private chambers. She understands that Spock was trying to stall her, while Kirk stole the device. Before the ROmulans can reach him, Kirk steals the device and beams back aboard the Enterprise. Kirk orders to install the cloaking device on the enterprise.
The commander decides to execute Spock. As soon as Scott installs the device, Kirk and Sulu locate Spock on board the Romulan ship and beam him back, but the Commander piggy backs with him to the Enterprise. enterprise warps away at factor 9, and the Romulans aim their guns at them. This is when Kirk engages the cloaking device and escapes.
