- Second officer Lt. Commander Data has agreed to speak a complete record of a day in his functioning for the benefit of scientific android engineer Commander Maddox and concludes that his programming must be improved concerning interaction with human emotions - most puzzling given human practices such as irony.
Chief Miles O'Brien's human wedding is amply confusing, even for Worf; bride Keiko Ishikawa's (Rosalind Chao) gibbers even more illogical. Data is the father of the bride and Keiko is nervous and wants to call the wedding off. Data calculates that Miles wants to make Keiko happy. Cancelling the wedding would make her happy, and hence Miles would be happy about it. But Miles is super angry and that confuses Data. Geordi tells Data that despite what Keiko says, the wedding will still proceed. Data has to find a gift. Worf tells Data that he needs to learn to dance as well, as father of the bride has to lead her to the first dance.
Miles wants Data to convince Keiko to go ahead with the wedding. Data argues with Keiko that she does not seem happy about her decision to not have the wedding, and hence should re-examine it. Keiko gets upset and Data goes to speak to Deanna. They debate about what makes a successful marriage. Learning dances and which are appropriate from Dr. Crusher proves easy. She teaches her tap dancing, which he is able to imitate very easily. But then she finds out Data has to dance at a wedding and teaches him a more romantic number. She also teaches him how to lead. Keiko decides to agree to the wedding all by herself. Data is able to do a nice dance.
Arthur Conan Doyle's logic of elimination Data soon masters, in time to solve a mysterious accident during negotiations with a Romulan admiral. Vulcan Ambassador T'Pel (Sierra Pecheur) is scheduled on board ship Zhukov and Enterprise is on station waiting for it. T'Pel arrives. Picard asks for Federation list of all Romulan outposts along the neutral zone and then sets a course to take them very close to the zone itself. Data tells Picard that Romulan ships along the neutral zone are assigned in a confrontational alignment, designed to test Federation preparedness. He does not expect any conciliatory moves on their part.
T'Pel meets Data in private and wants him to reveal the strength of Enterprise deflector shield at max output. Data wants to report this to Picard and T'Pel cancels the request. She says she was testing Data. Enterprise reaches the designated coordinates by Picard, there they find a Romulan war-bird in the neutral zone, who text them the next coordinates. Picard orders to follow them into the Neutral zone. The 2 ships come face to face. T'Pel opens a channel to Romulan Admiral Mendak (Alan Scarfe). They acknowledge that there is no protocol for this meeting and T'Pel agrees to transport over to the Romulan ship. Picard asks T'Pel to reconsider and have the Romulans beam aboard instead. But something goes wrong during transportation. Miles loses the pattern and T'Pel never materializes on board the Romulan ship. T'Pel is dead. Mendak tells Picard that Romulans were only prepared to negotiate with T'Pel. But maybe Starfleet was not OK with normal diplomatic relations between the Federation and Romulans and hence engineered this "accident". Mendak calls off the conference.
Picard asks Data to investigate. He figures there was not transporter malfunction and the organic remains on the transporter didn't belong to T'Pel. Data concludes that the Romulans transported T'Pel off the Enterprise pad and left some identical genetic material in its place to simulate her death. Picard goes after the Romulan ship. He threatens Mendak to return T'Pel. Mendak reveals that T'Pel was a spy. She was sub-commander Selok of the Romulan Empire. As 3 more Romulan war-bird converge, Picard orders a retreat.
