Joaquin Marietta was a relatively famous figure during the California Gold Rush days of the 1850's, with a history clouded by controversy and exaggerated dime novel stories of his life. This episode of "Stories of the Century" probably adds to the murky legend by coming up with a tale about Murietta's family hacienda being sold for back taxes in an attempt to draw him out and arrest him for his past deeds.
As usual, Railroad Detective Matt Clark (Jim Davis) and his assistant Frankie Adams (Mary Castle) team up to bring down a famous outlaw. There's an interesting scene involving a cat-fight between Frankie and Murietta's (Rick Jason) spitfire girlfriend Maria (Charlita) who's jealousy knows no bounds. A bit later, Murietta turns against the hellcat who doesn't make it to the end of the story.
There's a protracted finale involving a gunfight at the hacienda mentioned earlier where Murietta hid some gold in an underground bunker. Returning with some of his men to retrieve it, the battle ends with a sheriff shooting Murietta. Of the dozen or so stories I've seen of this series so far, this one held the least interest.
