Lionel, an art dealer, restorer, and critic, is smitten with Janet, a woman who wants to take their relationship slower than Lionel would prefer. After their date, he takes Janet home and runs into his old friend Gladys. They stop at Gladys' home where she introduces Lionel to the work of John Roydon. John has a particular, if not questionable, process and methodology when painting portraits, and he only paints women. Lionel decides to spice up his love life by having Janet painted by John. Janet does not know that Lionel was the one to commission the painting. She thought John wanted to paint her due to her beauty. When the painting is complete, Lionel puts his new masterpiece on its mantle and reverse-engineers the painting's layers down to its base image. He then holds a party for the painting's big reveal, and a surprise for Janet.
