The Longest Distance

Warning: Spoilers
Following last episode, and Sarah's message to Bailey in Party of Five 6x04, she still hasn't told him that she is staying in NYC. Without enough money to pay november rent to Cecilia, Romy tells Sarah to ask Bailey for money, calling him the man who is completely devoted to her. This single line means a lot, that Sarah already told Romy what she has been through with Bailey in the last 4 years, that he manages a good restaurant, that he proposed her and why she said no. But Sarah refuses to call him for money beacause he wouldn't give it to her so she can stay in New York. So she visits Archer, the kind man who loved Robin Merrin, and he arranges a good job for her: being the personal assistant of Mrs Halloway, a wealthy woman of the city. Sarah becomes the "nanny" for her dogs (poodles) and at the same time, meets Spencer Halloway, her son, who runs a wealthy company of online trade. This doesn't make Sarah comfortable, and while going with the poodles to the bar where she works as a waitress, John Maguire offers her help. And the walk ends with a kiss between them. The next day, Sarah is alarmed because she cheated and confides in Romy, who wants her to focus on the job and tells her that all happened because she is insecure of her life, and didn't tell Bailey she is staying in NYC. Seeing what Sarah did, yes, it was wrong, a terrible thing to do, but to be fair, Bailey cheated on her with Callie (unforgettable) and kissed Lauren, one of the managers of Salinger's (in POF 5X21). Anyway, later, she goes to see Maguire and tells him that what they did was a mistake, and only now confess she has a boyfriend in SF. He is surprised and mad because she never mentioned Bailey, and also flirted with him in the last episode. He forces her to call her boyfriend and to tell him she is staying here, but when she does, obviously, Bailey is not in the house, he's at the restaurant, and she leaves a message so he calls her later. Then, she keeps doing her job taking care of the poodles, and Mrs Halloway asks her son to attend a fundraiser party, to take a date, so he chooses Sarah. She doesn't have money for a dress, and buys one with the intention to return it later. The problem is that Spencer, during the banquet, is too self absorbed, he doesn't pay attention to her and even tells to friends that she is just her mother's dogwalker. When he retrieves the tag of the dress (that she left there on purpose), she says she has had enough and leaves in a rage. Later, Spencer finds her and realizing that he behaved bad, gives her the money for the dress, to make amends. Also, Maguire confronts her for the "date" with Spencer, and she says she had no choice because Mrs Halloway pushed for it (still, the lady recognized in the party that it was a mistake). Then, happens the best moment of this episode, and this series so far: Sarah returns to her apartment, being a mess, saddened, and hears Bailey's message on the machine. He wants to know if it is the right number, if she is there, why she calls him when he is not around as she knows his free hours from work, and if there's something going on. The scene goes with a nice melody, while she sits saddened. This could have been the perfect moment to tell Sarah: Go home, go where you belong, go with your kind of husband who loves you so much, with Claudia and Julia, who love you as much as if you were their sister, with Owen, who needs you there. But the next day, Sarah still wants to be free, take care of herself and escape of that family life she had in SF. In the morning, Mrs Halloway offers her a raise, and to move into her house but she declines and quits, for the same reasons she left SF, to not be a kept woman. In her way out, Spencer behaves kindly to her and accompanies her to the street, and she decides to continue her way alone. Later, Archer visits her in the bar, and criticizes her for wanting that free life, waiting tables there, instead of stability. He says she's just like Robin Merrin (and I have to admit it, if I remember how was Robin's life in POF season 2, it's the truth). She responds she doesn't want to be taken care of, that he is not her father and doesn't owe her anything. He says that being like her mother is not a compliment and he walks away. Then, Cecilia demands the rent and Romy freaks out because Sarah left her well paid job, she decides to pawn a bracelet Bailey gave her for $150 (another nice moment). At the end, she enters the apartment to hear Bailey's voice again, this time demanding a call, so she attends. He seems to be alarmed, she tries to tell him not to be mad, and finally says she'll stay in New York. Now, Sarah's story here makes more sense, Archer recognizes it. Robin Merrin had that free life, living with a cat, traveling, going for tours, acting in theaters, etc. And Sarah, being raised as only child, was given a totally different life. Mr and Mrs Reeves wanted to protect her, and they gave her everything they could. At some point, she escaped from that kept life and wanted to start a free life with Bailey, like they did in POF early season 4. But when Bailey started to assume the family life, the "middle age life" with the house, Claudia and Owen, she felt somehow kept again, wanting to escape and have freedom. And that's why now between Bailey and Sarah there is a long distance, they want different things. Today she hoped she could have a long distance relationship with Bailey, but that can't work and won't work, they are distanced in many other ways, not only phisically.

As for the rest, there's no much to say. John is living with Joss, sharing a place. They are not in love with each other, but seems like they have a "no strings attached" relationship and they usually sleep together if they are single. Now that he found out that Sarah has a boyfriend (Bailey is much more than a boyfriend, and come on, pronounce it well), he leans on Joss. As for Romy, she has 2 dates with JB, but are really bad. They go to see The Miserables, and he hates musicals, arts, singing and theaters, which is what she wants as a career. Then, she learns that he wants to leave NYC, because he lived his whole life there, unlike her, who wants to stay in the "best city of the world". They decide not to date anymore, but then they find out that they both are lactose intolerant, and recognizing they like each other, they kiss. These are two relationships seem to have no future, so they are just making time.
