- Ralph: [Ralph enters the sheriff's office and addresses Melinda Curry] Mr. Gilman said he'd be right here, Miss.
- Melinda Curry: Thank you. He's the sheriff?
- Ralph: We don't... we don't have a regular sheriff here. He died.
- Melinda Curry: I'm sorry.
- Ralph: Well, no need to be. He was eighty-two. Mr. Gilman came down from Austin to help out till we could have another election. The way folks feel around here right now, they don't wanna get anybody else.
- [Ranger Gilman enters the sheriff's office]
- Ralph: This lady came to see you, Mr. Gilman.
- Hoby Gilman: Is there anything I can do for you?
- Melinda Curry: I'd like you to help me find my mother.
- Hoby Gilman: She ever been in Porter?
- Melinda Curry: The last letter I got from her was mailed from here.
- Hoby Gilman: Uh huh. So, uh, when did you, uh, see her last?
- Melinda Curry: I've never seen her.
- [Hoby appears stunned]
- Melinda Curry: I'm blind.

- [Aaron Adams escorts Melinda Curry into the sheriff's office]
- Aaron Adams: Morning, Hoby.
- Hoby Gilman: Aaron. How are you, Melinda?
- Melinda Curry: I'm fine.
- Hoby Gilman: You headin' back to Fort Worth?
- Melinda Curry: Yes, sir. I think that's best.
- Hoby Gilman: Well, I hope you won't think too badly of Porter. I mean, uh, for what happened.
- Melinda Curry: No, but I'll certainly never forget it.
- Hoby Gilman: Well, you have a nice trip now. And, uh, if you ever need anything, why you... you let us know.
- [Melinda raises her right hand and feels the left side of Hoby's face]
- Melinda Curry: Thanks again.
- Hoby Gilman: What for?
- Melinda Curry: My life.
