James Templeton arrives at Shiloh with the stated intention of writing a story about Judge Garth, who people back east consider a good candidate for a territorial senator representing Wyoming. Templeton soon proves to everyone he is a man of many talents. He can ride bucking broncs, shoot fast, play the violin, and dance. He is also well-traveled and heroic to almost everyone, but especially to Betsy. The lone exception is Trampas, who has an inherent dislike for him. Meanwhile, a second man, attorney Ray Harding, contacts Judge Garth about an old case the Judge ruled on and tries to blackmail the Judge about the case based on how the public might perceive the Judge's role. Harding and Templeton work together to scam the Judge, but their ploy fails when they cannot intimidate Garth. Templeton, however, is undeterred and switches gears. He quickly realizes married life with Betsy could provide a comfortable future for him, but Harding hires three hands fired by Garth to help kidnap Betsy for ransom. Templeton is forced to consider his priorities when he and Betsy are trapped by the kidnappers.
