Although she wrote to him two months ago that she would be visiting, Johnny is surprised when his nineteen year old daughter Laurie from Seattle, she who he has not seen since she was twelve, arrives at the station unannounced, she having driven her way across the country. Laurie, who doesn't really know her father, figures he must be an all right kind of guy since Laurie's mother - Johnny's ex-wife - is constantly railing against him, Laurie who is at a rebellious stage of her life. That rebellion includes having dropped out of college, she figuring that she was not learning anything meaningful in the process. But the biggest sign of her rebellion is what she brought with her from Seattle, that something still out in the van. With all these issues, Johnny has to decide if he will just be a good friend to Laurie as they had agreed, or if he will also play the role of father. Meanwhile, Andy, Johnny's friend, also feels like he has to act as a strict father figure to his friend, who doesn't seem to want to play any of the top-40 songs off the station's official playlist. And Jennifer goes to extremes to prevent an office supplies salesman, making a cold call, from seeing Mr. Carlson.
