During WW II, the 'Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service' (WAVES) was created as a branch of the US Naval Reserve. The unit was finally demobilized in September 1946. In 1948, Public Law 625 allowed women to serve in the regular Army or Navy on a permanent basis. Though the WAVES no longer existed, the obsolete acronym continued in popular and official usage until the 1970s.
