- While Agent Scully is still missing, Agent Mulder embarks upon an investigation involving vampires in Los Angeles, subsequently becoming involved with a sultry female vampire who yearns to escape her lifestyle.
- Working alone, Mulder travels to Los Angeles when a man is found dead, exsanguinated in his spa. This is the sixth such case Mulder has identified and the evidence at the crime scene is identical to that found at the others. The perpetrators are a trio of would-be vampires, but even the normally open-minded Mulder is skeptical about their real selves. That is until one of the trio is arrested and bursts into flames in his jail cell when sunlight touches him. Mulder meets someone who knows what they are and what they do.—garykmcd
- For the past year, Fox Mulder has been investigating the murders of six people in two states. The murderers have finally reappeared in Los Angeles after three months of inactivity. These murderers strike only at night, leaving their victims drained of blood through bite wounds on the exterior jugular and medial cubital veins. They smash every mirror in the house and they write on the walls with the victims' blood. "He who eats of my flesh and drinks of my blood shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day" [John 6:54, incorrectly shown as John 52:54]. Mulder thinks that they see themselves as an "unholy trinity" because the murders come in threes. In each case, the first is a father, the second a son, and the third a holy spirit. In Memphis, they murdered a father of three, a Korean woman named Linda Sun, and a Jesuit theologian. In Portland, they murdered a priest, the eldest son of six, and the owner of a New Age bookstore called "Holy Spirit." Their latest victim was the father of three boys. Mulder expects that there will be two more murders and then the unholy trinity will drop out of sight again.
Mulder's latest lead says that they are working at a local blood center. He starts phoning blood centers under guise of a payroll service looking for the W-4 form of a recent hiring. He hits pay dirt at the Hollywood Blood Bank when he hears of Frank, the newly-hired night watchman. That night, Mulder goes snooping and apprehends Frank [Frank Military] in the basement, drinking a pint of blood. Frank is taken to the LAPD, but the interrogation lights have him cowering in a corner until Mulder brings in a red light and turns off the overhead lights. Frank admits to being a vampire and calls himself "the Son," but he won't tell Mulder where his partners are, so Mulder has him placed in a cell with windows facing the morning sunrise, going along with what Mulder thinks is Frank's delusion. Astonishingly, when the morning sun enters the cell, Frank burns up.
Mulder notices an inkstamp on the back of Frank's burned hands. The stamp reads "Club Tepes," a local nightspot on Hollywood Blvd. That evening, Mulder stops at the club and meets Kristen Kilar [Perrey Reeves], who has no compulsion against showing Mulder how she pricks her finger with a hypodermic needle in order to get blood. When Mulder refuses to lick her finger, she offers it to another man, David Yung [Richard Yee.] Mulder follows Kristen and Yung to a restaurant called "Ra," where he finds them in a back room, cutting each other and licking up the blood. A car pulls up, and Kristen and Yung see Mulder looking in the window. Yung knocks Mulder to the ground and informs him that he and Kristen are consenting adults. When Yung returns to the back room, Kristen has disappeared. Yung is suddenly attacked and murdered by vampires.
A cursory examination by the county coroner reveals that the bites on Yung's body were made by three different people. Fingerprints taken at the scene lead Mulder to Kristen's house in Malibu Canyon. Further investigation of her previous addresses reveal that she was also living in both Portland and Memphis at the time that the vampire murders were committed there. Accompanied by several LAPD officers, Mulder searches Kristen's house, finding hypodermic needles and a snakebite suction cup used to extract blood. When Mulder finds a blood-filled loaf of bread in the oven, which he recognizes as an Eastern European protection against vampires, he tells the officers that Kristen has gone and is not coming back. Then he sits down and waits.
When Kristen returns, Mulder asks how she's connected with the murders. Kristen tells him how, as a young girl, she was beaten by her father until the taste of her own blood was the only thing that told her she was alive. When she met John aka The Son aka Frank, he beat her, too. One time he split open her lip, so she bit his in retaliation. They tasted each other's blood, and from that point on, they got into blood sports. One night John came home with two others, real vampires. Kristen decided to leave John and moved to Memphis. They followed. She moved to Portland. They followed. She tells Mulder that she's tired of running from them. Mulder informs her that John is dead. Without John in the group, she doesn't think they will continue to come after her, but Mulder warns that the group seems to have picked up a third person and volunteers to stay with Kristen to protect her (not to mention that he's smitten with her). Kristen lets him get cleaned up and they make love, not realizing that John is watching them from outside the window.
Just before sunrise, Kristen goes into the kitchen. John sneaks up behind her. He tells her how he was able to come back from the dead and offers the same to Kristen if she will only drink Mulder's blood. You have to drink the blood of a believer, John tells her, and Mulder knows what we are. He then puts a butcher knife in Kristen's hand and orders her to kill Mulder, but Kristen can't do it. Instead, she wakes up Mulder, tells him he must leave, and offers him her car. Then she uses the knife to kill the Father vampire, who was hiding in a dark corner. When Kristen tells Mulder that John is still alive, they go looking for him. John jumps Kristen and knocks her head against the wall. Mulder jumps John and ties him up. Then he and Kristen get into the car. Just as they're about to drive away, the Unholy Spirit female vampire jumps on the roof of the car. She smashes the sunroof and hauls Mulder out by his shirt collar. Kristen takes the wheel and drives the car into the Unholy Spirit, impaling her on a wall peg.
Kristen refuses to leave without John, so Mulder runs back into the house to get him. Suddenly, he hears the tires squealing, so he runs back outside to find the car parked at the end of the driveway with no Kristen in sight. Kristen is back in the house, spilling gasoline around. John taunts her about drinking the blood of a believer, so she slathers her hand with her own blood from the back of her head and licks it. Then he taunts her about having to take a life before she can be turned into a real vampire, so she lights a match and tosses it on the gasoline while saying, "I'll take mine." From out in the yard, Mulder watches helplessly as the house explodes into flames.
Epilogue: Firefighters cleaning up after the fire inform Mulder that they found four bodies, all reduced to ashes. [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl.]
